アウグスティヌスの『告白』に見られる友情関係

今学期は赴任先の大学で、５人の学生と、もう一人の教員と一緒に、少しずつアウグスティヌスの『告白』を読んできて、読書会を行っています。

かなり多様なグループです。

カナダ人（女子生徒）
インドネシア人（男子生徒）
ジンバブウェ人（女子生徒）
中国系アメリカ人（女子生徒）
日本人・アメリカ人（二重国籍を持つ女子生徒）
ウガンダ人（女性教員）
アメリカ人（男性教員である私）

によって構成されている読書会です。

ということで、日本語版ではなく（残念ながら原典のラテン語版でもなく）、F. J. Sheedという方が美しく翻訳した英語版（第2版）を使っています。なかなかの名訳です。

昨日は、第３巻と第４巻を読んできて、色々と話し合いました。

いくつかのテーマのうち、私たちを特に楽しませてくれたのは、第４巻の８章に記されている「フレンズ」「友だち」についてのこの瞑想でした。

. . . the comfort I found in other friends—and the pleasure I had with them in things of earth—did much to repair and remake me.

All kinds of things rejoiced my soul in their company—to talk and laugh and do each other kindnesses; read pleasant books together, pass from lightest jesting to talk of the deepest things and back again; differ without rancor, as a man might differ with himself, and when most rarely dissension arose find our normal agreement all the sweeter for it; teach each other or learn from each other; be impatient for the return of the absent, and welcome them with joy on their homecoming; these and such like things, proceeding from our hearts as we gave affection and received it back, and shown by face, by voice, by the eyes, and a thousand other pleasing ways, kindled a flame which fused our very souls and of many made us one.
